What is the deeper biblical meaning of gold in dreams?

In the Bible, gold symbolizes blessings, prosperity, purity, spiritual refinement, heaven, and wisdom. Therefore, there are many different ways to interpret dreams about gold.

In total, gold is mentioned 417 times in the Bible. This precious metal was important and often used to make many Holy items. One of the most important objects made from gold was the Ark of the Covenant. It held tablets engraved with the Ten Commandments. Overall, the usage of gold in the Bible shows it was high in value.

1. Gold represents God’s Word

In a positive dream, seeing gold means that you’re focused on the right things. You may be the type of person that loves wisdom, Godly instruction, obedience, reading the Bible, and listening to wise counsel. If this describes you, then you are someone that highly values holiness.

Similarly, David understood that following the wisdom of God would result in a blessed and successful life. Therefore, in Psalms, David highlights that the word of God is more precious than gold: Because I love your commands more than gold, more than pure gold.” (Psalm 119:127) Overall, your dream is a reminder that God’s instructions are a treasure and should remain your main focus.

Searching for gold in your dream can mean you’re looking for the wisdom of God. And receiving gold can represent spiritual wisdom and revelation.

"More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb." (Psalm 19:10)

2. Gold represents Testing

To dream of gold in a fire, melting gold to liquid, or shaping/moulding gold means you’re in a period of testing. This dream is an encouragement that you’re strong and successfully overcoming an obstacle in your life. Although your situation is hard, be encouraged because you’re being perfected in this trial.

God purifies believers of all imperfections. In the Bible, God uses the process of refining gold to describe how he makes humans pure. For example, in Malachi 3:3, the priests were offering impure sacrifices to God which showed that their hearts were corrupted. In response to their unhealthy behaviors, God would: sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD.

Gold can’t be destroyed and is virtually indestructible.

Overall, gold can’t be destroyed and is virtually indestructible. So, having faith refined by fire means nothing can come between you and God. Essentially, the refining process hurts, but be encouraged because you’re being perfected!

  • And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’” (Zechariah 13:9)
  • The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.” (Proverbs 27:21)

Testing produces gold foundation

Dreaming of gold can be an encouragement that you’re doing a good job! It means you are righteous and you value the word of God as rare gold. You are the type of person that takes the Bible to heart and truly tries to imitate Jesus. When testings come, you will be able to stand firm because you have faith in the word of God. Overall, you’re building a solid foundation of gold when you’re consistently obedient to God.

If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.” (1 Corinthians 3:12-15)

3. Gold represents Purity

Have you overcome hard situations recently? Do you wonder if God is proud of you? Are you always looking to honor God in all you do? Then, dreaming of gold is an encouragement. The dream means you are successfully conquering obstacles in your path. Life may be hard, but you seem to be allowing God to purify you. He is removing fear, pride, pain, and other unhealthy emotions during this season.

Believers that overcome trials are similar to “gold refined by fire.” Also, a righteous believer is rare like gold because they shine bright in an evil world. Therefore, keep up the good work and continue to follow God’s leading and discipline. You are powerful and you’re bringing his kingdom to earth.

"But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold." (Job 23:10)
  •  “My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver.” (Proverbs 8:19)
  • so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:7)
  • I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.” (Revelation 3:18)

4. Gold represents Blessings, Wealth, and Prosperity

Seeing gold in your dream means you will see an increase in your spiritual, emotional, and daily life. For example, God may increase your confidence which will cause you to do better at work. This could lead to financial increase or more confidence at home with your family.

The most popular prophetic meaning of gold is blessings, wealth, abundance, and prosperity. This is a popular meaning because gold is highly valued and often used by the rich or royalty. However, I would advise you to be open to the type of increase God wants to give you. While we seek financial rewards, sometimes our rewards are those in heaven. Overall, seeing gold can mean you have earned more heavenly rewards for your righteous actions and spiritual victories. (Luke 6:23)

However, dreaming of gold can be a sign that financial increase is coming in your life. When Christians use the wisdom of God it can bring success and abundance.

For example, King David enjoyed victories, prosperity, and spiritual wellness due to the favor of the Lord on his life. Therefore, his lips couldn’t help but praise God. Also, in Psalm 21:3 he was given a gold crown as a sign of victory. “You have granted him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. You came to greet him with rich blessings and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.“

God has unlimited gold

God owns everything in the world. He has an unlimited supply of gold and blessings.

God created gold, so it's his to give. "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts." (Haggai 2:8)
  • The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys.” (Genesis 24:35)
  • Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.” (Genesis 13:2)

5. Gold represents Vanity and Lust

Sometimes, it is good to see gold in dreams. However, it can also point out that you are lusting and desiring the things of the world. Therefore, evaluate the emotions you felt in the dream. Were you desiring the gold? Did you want the gold more than anything else? Then, this type of dream is an encouragement to put God, love, family, and friends before material things, status, and titles.

The Bible warns that the lust of treasure will cause a man’s heart to be corrupt. And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold. (Deuteronomy 17:17)

Also, in Ezekiel 28:4, the prince of Tyre used wisdom to gain riches in an unrighteousness manner. “by your wisdom and your understanding you have made wealth for yourself, and have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries.”

Therefore, Jesus instructs us to be sure we keep our heart pure from a lust for worldly things. He said: “do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19)

6. Heaven is filled with Gold

In dreams, entering into a dazzling place filled with gold and positive feelings is a good sign. Perhaps, you visited heaven in your dream? Heaven is built with precious gems which includes gold.

"The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass." (Revelation 21:18-21)

    1. Hello Marcus,

Thanks for sharing such a cool dream! I would need more details to fully help, but I thought of this immediately:

“ for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34)

Sounds like your heart is pure gold and when you speak people can see it. Sounds like an encouragement that’s you’ve humble submitted to being pruned, refined, and disciplined by God. Keep up the good work!!

  1. A few weeks ago I was praying and meditating ….a gold elliptical shape on fire with golden flames appeared in the dark. There was no smoke and the gold didn’t melt. It was in front of me but I had to look upwards to look at it and as I looked up things were getting brighter and the flaming gold got even brighter.

      1. Thank you Christina, I have been through a lot of things this year, a back injury which I’ve almost recovered from, also a lot of spiritual/ demonic attacks which have stopped. All these things started just after I got baptised at Easter time. It’s been hard but I remain trusting in God. Your reply is much appreciated.
